Zimbabwean Memory Quilt
15 March, 2024
A bit of background on the quilt. Last year I was contacted by Amanda whose, Zimbabwean grandmother had made a variety of EPPs (English Paper Pieces) using a vast array of fabrics. These EPPs were boxed and there they stayed for many a year. Amanda wanted to have something made with these and as neither she nor her mother were handy with a needle she contacted me.
I’ve now finished hand stitching the various hexie blocks to the background. I’m in the middle of making the quilt sandwich ready for quilting. Deciding on the fabric for the back of the quilt is always fun exercise. Do you go with a plain fabric or a patterned. I gave Amanda a choice of fabrics and she chose these amazing Abstract ShweShwe fabrics.
I’m very particular when I use 2 widths of fabric for the backing. I believe that the fabric should be patterned matched as much as possible, so that I looks like one big seamless fabric.
